Meet and Greet

Yesterday's blip I mentioned that our Rising 2 year old heifers were returning home last night after spending the past year grazing in Canterbury.

The truck arrived about 8.45pm, but because it was dark, and raining it took us until 9.40pm to unload them, put them in their paddock and get home. They weren't too keen on getting off the truck, probably because it was dark, and they hadn't been on the farm since they were calves, so had no idea where they were.

This morning we feed out hay to them, and had a chance to have a good look at them. It is amazing how much they have grown, and changed in colouring, in that year.

The sun came out after lunch, so I took the camera and went for a walk to see them again. It just happens that the main milking herd were in the paddock next door to them, and being the curious creatures that these animals are, they all lined up along the fence, and had a meet and greet session with the milking herd. There was a lot of sniffing and licking of each other over the fence - it was interesting standing there watching them.

Tomorrow the Vet is coming to pregnancy test the heifers that have returned home, and to also give them their Lepto vaccination. Some are obviously in calf, as they already are starting to develop an udder. Hopefully the rest of them will be in calf also, although they may be the later calving ones, and their udder hasn't started to develop yet.
