New on Old

My Wisteria is very old. The original trunk is huge, gnarled and mostly rotten. A few springs ago we had no flowers blooming at all. It seemed the original old Wisteria structure had died. I was devastated. Son Duncan and I pruned and cut out most of the apparently dead branches that were growing over the pergola. Then joy of joy, over the next few months new shoots appeared at the base of the ancient trunk and snaked up and over the pergola. These days the new shoots, now branches, produce a profusion of flowers . This image shows a new branch on the left and the lovely panticle of tiny flowers lying against the old old aged trunk. Thus new on old.
