The end of the road

Sanctuary by Roddy Mathieson

Another of the Roadends Sculptures erected in 2000. This one is definitely at the end of the road - the Lochporte road here ends at the loch, although there is a walking route that starts here for those wishing to climb the hills of Burrival and Eaval which dominate the east side of North Uist. It was a long and twisty narrow road alongside lochs and through scattered fishing hamlets. And this sculpture is at the end.

The undulating shape of the sculpture is supposed to relate to the many flights of swans which regularly gather on the lochs throughout North Uist. We have been surprised by just how many swans there are in the lochs. There is also a reference to the contours of the small fishing boats, which set out from here to the seas beyond.

Our last day and a planned interruption to the power supply, so we set out for lunch. Someone told us about Charlie’s Bistro on Benbecula and we were delighted to find a friendly little place serving lovely food. A shame that we only found it today or we would definitely have been back.

By chance a good title for today! What a day!
