Road trip day 3
One of our goals for this trip was to visit the Macah tribe cultural museum in Neah Bay, Here in the upper NW corner of the USA. In the 70s we did a lot of family camping on these ocean beaches with our little boys and spent some time at Ozette, an old Macah village site. In 1970 a whole coastal village started to be uncovered by tides ….it was originally buried with a mudslide, so much of the artifacts are well preserved for 500 years. I’ve found my pictures from slides that I saved from then ( I think this is 1974). and made a collage for the extra of the excavating… they used sea water in garden hoses to wash away the mud. Now there is a museum in Neah Bay displaying these 55,000 finds! It’s a beautiful building by the same architect as the UBC archaeology museum. Couldn’t take photos but I snuck one of the whale and whaling boats….. I think there is a whale bone ( a big scapula with the tip of the harpoon imbedded in it..now in the museum…) in the old photo of the digs. So glad we finally made it there!!! ( I find it hard to believe the museum has been there since 1979)
Big drive today…lots of logging trucks .. but tomorrow we rest. All good !
It still is a long road and a hike to get to Ozette …not going to happen anymore..by us. It’s a lot harder now with all the regulations of the indigenous tribes. We always had to park on reservation land and pay some kids to watch our car….
