Julesey's

Mysterious...

Was looking round the garden for a sunny afternoon blip. We have a piece of old carpet theoretically keeping weeds under control so I moved it hoping to find a toad . I found instead 4, yes 4 adult slo-worms. I put the carpet back down. I assume there is some kind of colony there and did not want to disturb them.
I then picked up another piece of carpet and saw a humungus slo-worm with its head in an ants nest, ants going crazy. Do slo-worms eat ants I wonder? . Again I didnt want to interfere so replaced the carpet. As I did so I spotted this white globe which on closer inspection looks like a wasps nest. I assumed it was from last year as it was so white and wispy. There were 6 or 8 beautiful hexagons inside.
I decided to move it to somewhere more sunny so I could (theoretically) get a photo with enough depth of field to catch the inside and outside of the nest. A minute or so after I had set it on a bramble an insect landed on it. I am not sure if it is a bee or a wasp but it was pretty excited by it and stood on the nest rubbing its back feet over it . I think I was now as excited as the insect! Then this other insect landed on the nest........CF card full.......*!**
So that was it! By the time I went in to the house , got another CF card and rushed out again a puff of wind had blown the nest off the bramble and the insects had gone.
When looking at the image on the computer I was stunned to see what look like larvae in the hexagons in the nest. I have tried looking it up on the internet to make sure it is a wasp nest and not some kind of solitary bee. Any identification of nest appreciated. Not sure if the insects on it are related to it or not.

The garden is very wild and tangly but looks like the wild life like it! Half the veg patch is now destined to stay a slo-worm sanctuary instead of housing potatos .
