Just a joust
Well, what a day! The hotel has turned out to be a bit Basil Fawlty-ish, with things not working properly (no hot water), freezing cold room, waiting for an hour to be served breakfast, etc.
We complained (nicely) and the wonderful ladies on reception could not be nicer or more apologetic. We have come back today to the best room in the house, and we're sitting in our bay window, with complimentary wine and gifts. I think they were so full last night that they couldn't cope. However, all is forgiven!
We set off for the jousting tournament at Urquhart Castle. It was not quite as I had expected. True, there were no horses in the posters - just men with long poles jabbing each other - but the word 'jousting' suggests something else to me. However, it was fun. There were a few tents and a few people dressed up. It was a fantastic setting!
We watched a few of the 'battles' with a couple of grown men in armour flailing about and trying to cut off the coloured cards on the opponent's shoulders. Each fight lasted about a minute. The castle looked fantastic in the sun, and it's a place we've been meaning to visit for some time.
We then had a drive around the countryside. Still some snowy peaks in view. Fantastic scenery. As always, we were on the lookout for the perfect picnic spot. And as always, when we eventually give up and chose a parking spot in the sun, but no view, as soon as we had packed up and driven round the corner - there it was- the perfect picnic spot, with a picnic table, a view, in the sun. I think I will do a map of excellent picnic spots in the UK. That would be fun!
We took a diversion when I saw the sign saying 'Red Kites'. There was an RSPB hide and food had been put out. There was one red kite swooping around, and I could have blipped a blurry silhouette of one, but decided to use the knights, as I doubt that opportunity will arise again.
Back to the hotel and I might put on my iPod, as I have a dock in the room! Luxury.
I could get used to this...
PS Thanks for all your comments yesterday - I will catch up when I'm home. I had to stand in reception to upload.
