Farmers' Market
It has been a dreich and drizzly day today. There was a time when I would have complained bitterly about it, but not now because it means low fire danger. Now...if only it produced some rain....
There were noticeably fewer stalls at the market today, but I was drawn to this one because the produce was beautiful and beautifully arranged and the selection indicates the change of season. Just look at those glossy eggplants, those huge leaves of chard and the neatly stacked carrots and turnips. We went back three separate times to buy first some delicata squash (lower right...you can eat the skin!) then some beautiful heads of lettuce and finally, one of the irresistible flower arrangements. (the farmer's wife grows and arranges them.) They were selling fast.
It must be so much work to transport all the produce, set it up so attractively, pack it up agin and then go home to grow some more before going to the next farmers' market in another town. The farmer was an affable guy and I liked the fact that he had good, honest dirt on his hands! There's a shot of him in extras.
We also had a delicious crepe made on the spot, and some hand brewed coffee, visited the enchilada man (we got some tamales as well) and purchased some fuyu persimmons and clementines from the fruit guy.
Dana is working her way through the apples and the pickles. Today it was some kind of apples I haven't heard of and kimchee.
Our Sunday night dinner at Dana and Jim's is tonight because Will is moving to Santa Barbara. It's just like Will to announce one day that he's planning a major change tomorrow! I think his girlfriend, who is there, is his main motivation. That and the fact that they now share a dog which makes sharing living space more important....
