Wildlife checklist

We had leftovers from last night’s dinner as our breakfast this morning-delicious!- plus some of the lovely fruit toast. It was brighter so we had a look around the lovely garden before leaving, and decided to try and see some kangaroos before going to Sydney. We’d heard that they often congregated at Euroka camp ground so went over there, but found the roads closed due to the floods so turned back and had a wander around Glenbrook. Lovely wee town and had a great chat with the staff in a coffee shop about differences between UK and Australian cafes (Oz one’s open earlier and shut about 3.30pm, but do offer any size flat white!) and then to a lady and her customer in another shop about where to find Kangaroos. They suggested we went to Featherdale park where they host a collection of all Australian animals and birds. It was on our way into the city so we went along. It was great! We got up close and personal with wallabies, kangaroos, koalas, cassowaries, little penguins, snakes etc. Amazing to see up close as the joeys came in and out of the wallabies’ pouches (e when they are inside all four paws stick out a little!), and to get much closer to the koalas…most of whom were asleep as usual, but some were eating, stretching and scratching.
Once we’d had our fill (the monitor lizard wasn’t as exciting as the one we saw on the path the other day!) we drove on and into the city. Somewhat hair raising as we navigated complicated roadworks to get to the AirBnB place, unpack the car and leave the cases up in the apartment, then drove in circles around the downtown area as our sat nav signal faded and we hit one way streets and no right turns. Nightmare, but thanks to a well timed U turn and helpfully entering a state of zen at the critical moment we managed to find the car hire place and park the car to get it returned. Phew!
Walked back to the apartment (in Darlinghurst), stopping for a celebratory cocktail in a lovely little old fashioned bar near Kings Cross (recommended by a lady we bumped into!).
Home and made some mushroom pasta for supper and settled into the apartment. Lovely modern top floor flat, with a balcony (although rather close to the trainline), but with a washing machine and drier which was so exciting…we can finally have clean clothes! We washed and dried all evening and it was great! Finished the last brownie from Leura with a cup of tea and watched Wine Country….a daft but funny film about a bunch of women on a holiday weekend in Napa valley.
Excited to be on this next stage of our trip…and to explore Sydney.
