Nostalgic Fish and Chip Run!
Having tried many times to be in Lincolnshire at the right time for this iconic and nostalgic treat - 'Upton Chippy' we realised that with LV moving this might be the last realistic opportunity. (This Chippy is only open Friday evening and Saturday lunchtime and that's it). But we also wanted to visit with Auntie Helen in Derbyshire on the way. So we were up good and early this beautiful Saturday morning, so much so that we only managed to see Paul in the Ryland Rd household before heading off in the Black Knight into the pleasant undulations of Derbyshire and the little town of Heanor.
There we encountered L's oldest living relative in a very pleasant assisted living home which even had a lovely communal quiet lounge where we were able to pass the time catching up on family news and some old photos of L's mum and her as they grew up from babies to older teenagers. A H wanted to see the van and so backed it up to the window before heading out up the M1, M18 etc to the tiny little hamlet of Upton where this extraordinary Chippy is located.
As you can see from the main photo, this fish and chip friary (I know it isn't the right word, but I thought it sounded good), is the only one in the country that is coal fired - obviously not terribly environmental, but as it is the only one, probably not making as much difference as the rather huge chimneys we saw on the way that were generating electricity from rather more coal. The second and most nostalgic part of this experience is that they fry everyting in lard - something that I remember well as a kid turning up early at the chip shop and the friers were still full of big blocks of white lard before they heated up ready for cooking. Lastly, the taste was definitely worth the effort to make it there. We also met LV there on his way to some wine tastings which seem to be going really well - which is great news.
Then we headed to our home away from home in Reepham to begin the wind down of the last few days of our trip. There may be a little overnight adventure yet to come, but before that LV and I get to watch a Liverpool match together in the same room as opposed to over the internet!
Went shopping in Tesco. Cooked a Hello Fresh meal ready for the worker when he gets in which L also enjoyed of prawns with bulgar wheat and zhoug. I was too full to eat much else and just had a corned beef sandwich. Winding down after the multiple visits and chats over the last 2 days. Extras of the siblings outside the chippy and a picture of the dish itself before consumption.
