Lambs! This cute guy here is Black Grass. The Nantucket Conservation Foundation now has a flock of 57 sheep including two dozen lambs. They're used to graze heavily on undesirable plants, especially scrub oak.
Through breeding, sheep have become food snobs. They expect succulent grain or green grasses. They won't eat shrubby things unless they really really have to. We've had a few generations of sheep now, and they're getting more amenable to the idea of eating these less-than-tasty plants.
The sheep get clipped and the wool used to make little sheep dolls and wool for various clothing items. They're popular with the locals, too. Unfortunately, the guy in charge won't let any of the sheep to be slaughtered for food and the flock has far too many males. It's a shame. We could have a killer cookout.
Today was the second day of work. We drove around the island and got acquainted with where things were. I also got lost twice on my bike today. I made it to where I was going, though.
Tomorrow is a fire day! We'll be out burning some nature.
