International Car Free Day

I cycled this morning. We walked to get the boys this afternoon. The boys were very excited to be picked up by Uncle J.!

The usual car chaos around their school showed that very few were aware of today’s date. Over half the car journeys in the U.K. are for journeys of less than two miles. Many day trippers by car rarely stray more than a few hundred metres from their cars when they get to their beach/beauty spot or even trunk road lay-by!

“The first official, global Car Free Day was launched in 2000. Many big cities, like Bogota and Jakarta, close their central roads on this day and fill them with walking and cycling events, and smaller car-free events take place around the world.”

Car free day has slipped by almost unnoticed here today. Maybe next year?
