Verdant
We had a very smooth journey up to Lancashire and arrived in sufficient time for a walk along Grizedale Beck through Holme Wood. This Alder woodland is in a sheltered gorge, and has abundant ferns, mosses and sheets of Opposite-leaved Golden-saxifrage carpeting the many seepages and trickles feeding the beck. The overcast skies made it very gloomy under the dense shade of the Alders, but also wonderfully atmospheric and an interesting contrast to our local woodlands. By the time we left it had started raining gently, the leading edge of a front that was forecast to bring heavy rain for the next twenty-four hours!
