Gone Fishing
Chew Valley Lake:
The largest man made lake in South-West England, with an area of 1,200 acres and a capacity of 20,000 million litres. It was created in the early 1950s by damming the River Chew .
Providing much of the drinking water for the city of Bristol and surrounding area, it is supplied by rain falling on the Mendip Hills.
Before the valley was flooded, archaeological investigations were carried out that showed evidence of occupation since Neolithic times and many Roman artefacts were discovered.
Several villages were drowned by the waters and when the levels are low remnants of the buildings can be glimpsed beneath the waves.
