Etna & Taormina

We took a trip across the island today to see Mount Etna and to visit the beautiful (busy) town of Taormina.

Main photo shows the impressive ancient Greek/Roman amphitheatre in Taormina. Quite the most impressive setting (although by that time of day Etna was hidden in the background haze); it’s still used for performances as you can see from the less ancient seating and stage.

Earlier, we ascended Etna as far to the summit as you can go; they don’t allow you to get further due to potential risk of eruption. Ascent firstly by cable car then jeep-bus, and then finally a little  by foot.
Interesting to find out that there are actually 4 craters that erupt; they took us to the most active one.
