Sur le pont ...

Today we arrived in Avignon one of France's most historic towns.  It is famous for being the seat of the papacy (home of the Pope) from 1309 to 13 77. The palais des Papes is one of the most important medieval Gothic building in Europe (extra1).  Seven successive popes resided here and it is one of the few French cities to have preserved its city walls. Naturally it's a major centre of tourism although the interior of much of the palais has been destroyed/changed over the centuries and there is little to be seen in way of furniture etc. it does have a very good shopping area with many expensive top-brand names. 
The second extra is the original bridge (pont) in the song, but only four of the original 22 arches are now standing. 
it was a lovely warm evening and after dinner we went to the rear deck to sit where we saw this beautiful Ferris wheel.
