Craigievar Castle

Craigievar Castle is one of the Aberdeenshire Group of castles in the care of the National Trust for Scotland.

It is to close this September to allow work to be carried out on the Harling which is the pink coating covering the masonry on the exterior.

The castle will be closed for 2023 and should be open again in 2024.

Pat and I decided we should visit it before the building was closed.

After breakfast we drove up to Craigievar via Cairn O Mount. The weather was fine and we made good time.

Visitors are given guided tours and are usually in groups of 10. It is not possible to book in advance.

We booked our place and then enjoyed our picnic lunch.

Craigievar is very much a building of rooms stacked over some seven floors. The stairs are very narrow spirals going up and also going down; 2 different stairs.

It is moderately difficult to get around and some of the doorways are very low.

It is a fascinating home full of many items of interest. The story of the family is very colourful.

After our visit, we started on our return journey and headed back via Cairn O Mount. The weather has deteriorated quite badly and soon we were enveloped in thick fog. Let’s call it low cloud.

The downhill descent from the summit was made at about 10 to 15 mph. The road is a series of sharp bends and cars was required in abundance.

Gradually we exited the cloud and could travel in a much more relaxed fashion.

We stopped in Dundee and enjoyed exceptional Indian cuisine.
