This is where we stayed for a couple of nights. The Auld Post Office , Spittal , Caithness.
It was easy to find as it’s just off the A9 which is much quieter along this stretch.
The owners have been doing up the property for nearly 30 years. It was a complete ruin when they started. Planning took over three years to get and there were other complications along the way including having to replace the whole roof slates, even though there was nothing wrong with them, so that it was the same as the extension.
The little cottage we stayed in has been completely rebuilt and is now really cosy with a lounge and small kitchen.
Lynne the owner showed us the photo album she has. Behind the cottage is a quarry where Caithness stone is cut. They have planted a small forest which works well in hiding any sound.
The gardens are amazing. Beautifully landscaped and are open sometimes under the Garden Scheme. There are lots of roses and Dahlias and plenty to see all year round.
Lynne had a photo of the old post (Postman) Jamie from the early 1900’s standing by the old part of the cottage which was the post office and a more recent one when the renovations were completed with the currant post also called Jamie.
Weyland Lynne’s husband is the garden and he has family living in Faversham .
