Just over ten years ago after Richard Edward had heard about the derelict overgrown walled garden at Preston Hall in Midlothian he knocked on the door of the Callander family house and volunteered to help to clear it. The original garden is believed to have been built in 1806 to supply fruit and vegetables for the main house and flowers for the many guests who stayed with the family both at Preston Hall and their London property in Mayfair. In the late Victorian times there were over 15 gardeners working but by the 1970s it had it become too expensive to maintain.
Within two years he had already made good progress, as seen in the links and now the hedging and trees have grown tall with many little “rooms” full of plants. There is still much to do especially in the green house where there are figs, grapes, apricots and nectarines as well as fruit in the garden and much of the work is being done now by a paid gardener and volunteers.
