Crossing the divide

So it's been less than a week since I disconnected my landline, and (naturally) my mobile phone has promptly given up the ghost.

Granted, I've been putting off getting a new mobile phone for about a year, because I didn't like the iphone 5, and I kept humming and haaing about getting an android. And any time that I made a decision, a new model would come out and I'd get all confused again. Of course, all that iphone v. android rivalry doesn't help - seriously people, this ridiculous chasm yawning between those in the iphone camp and those in the android camp and all the flinging of poo from both sides really is unnecessary. It's a PHONE.

My old iphone 3 served me well, but I've been nagged to death by android addicts about how much better their phones are, so in the interests of objectivity I decided to give android a go. (I did also consider downgrading to a plain and simple phone that just makes calls and sends text messages - but I've been assured that once you've made the move to a smartphone you never go back.)

So of course my decision to try android meant that I spent half the evening firing off text messages to people screeching 'Where is....? What the....? How do I.....? WHAT?? NOOOOOO!!!!! Why can't I....?" All of these queries dealt with vitally important issues, like my need to set the Darth Vader theme ringtone on ex-partner's phone numbers, and my hysteria at discovering that my own personal favourite ringtone of the B52's Rock Lobster wasn't transferrable.

And as for the discovery that the model I bought was so new that there was virtually no phone cases or protective screens in the shops as yet - well, I had my heart set on an apple green phone case, so I nearly had a meltdown at learning I could only buy a dingy grey cover or a purple one that's not even as cool as the sparkly fuschia cover I had for my old iphone.

I sense a long hard learning curve ahead.
