Abbotsbury Swannery

Another wonderful day in the Dorset country side. Sun shone most of the day, but once more there was a cold wind, like it was off snow! Dups and I have been to the the above Swannery, where there are hundreds of mute Swans at this unique natural sanctuary. At the moment They are sitting on eggs which the keepers expect that they will hatch about mid May. They are later than normal this year, just like spring is late.
The Swannery was established by Benedictine Monks who built a monastery at Abbotsbury during the 1040s. The monks farmed the swans to produce food for their lavish banquets.
We had a hot bowl of soup for lunch to warm up again, before journeying into countryside around where Dups had lived. All very fascinating to me, with all the villages and churches along the way. We also visited Dups' mum at West Bay, and took more photos around the harbour. On our way home they sky became very black and there was a storm, which looked fantastic across the landscape, and we managed to take a few photos before we had to scoot, as we were going out for dinner. Had a lovely meal at The Nothe Tavern, in Weymouth, with Trish and Terry.
I had Dover Sole, finished of with a mint chocolate cheesecake!!!
