If you can't beat them...

Silage making.

During the morning there was the noise of machinery from the field behind the house.  It wasn't until quite a while later I was up stairs and saw they were almost finished gathering second cut silage.  I rushed to grab the camera.  There were two "units" working this one and a tractor with silage box and silarator.

In case anybody is unfamilair with silage I will explain.  Silage is basically pickled grass.  In the past it would be made in a "silage pit" where the grass was dumped, pressed down by running tractors back and forward over it, and then covered in plastic sheets.  This gave an environment with very little oxygen so bacteria started to work on breaking down the grass producing acids as a by product.  The acids killed the bacteria and the grass was preserved for winter feed.  One problem with this was the effluent being highly accid attacked the concrete of the pit.  If it got into waterways it was serious pollution.  Now much of the silage is made in bales wrapped in "cling film".  This I suspect was going into a pit.
