It's just there!
In Warcop Churchyard there is an archway. It doesn't go anywhere in particular and serves no real purpose. It's just there!
Apparently it came from Burton Hall, a fortified manor house dating from the 15th century. The Hall was demolished by the army over thirty years ago. There was an old village of Burton, but this was taken over during the Second World War for use as a firing range.
In 1851 Burton was described as a small hamlet two miles North of Warcop. The Hall was said to have been built on the site of an old friary. Aerial photographs show the outline of the Hall on the ground, but this area is now in the Warcop army training zone, all of which is marked on the map as 'Danger Area'!
No one seems to know why this bit of the Hall was saved or why it ended up in the churchyard. I don't suppose many people realise it is there anyway.
