A cavalcade of many horses riding around Musselburgh and its environs as far as Whitecraig and Elphinstone. The burgh flag is carried in a tradition dating back to at least 1682 although probably well before that when riders would check the boundaries were safe from any encroachment. Common Ridings are annual events celebrated in several Scottish border towns and a few other places like Musselburgh and Edinburgh which had been vulnerable to English attack in times gone by. The ride out comes almost at the end of Musselburgh’s Festival Week.
