There's something about Dave...
A few days after the Turtle Dove woke up all the birders on Twitter (and they'd only just gone back to sleep after the bluethroat), a Caspian Tern sailed onto the Severn. It's flitted up and down the river between Epney and WWT Slimbridge and today it was trying to look inconspicuous in a group of snipe Black-tailed Godwit on Rushy. To be fair, I think they'd noticed.
The hide was full of twitchers... one had driven up from Cornwall and was staying local for the week. He'd seen the Tern on Monday but had come back for more on Tuesday, and Wednesday, and probably he'll be following it tomorrow. I'm enjoying the unusual birds and I'm keen to check out the hashtag each morning, but I don't think I'm quite ready to travel the land.
I mentioned the new Charfield railway station build yesterday and a couple of you here picked up on it. I waffled into my random blog this morning - something I do when I need to get my thoughts in order - and you can see my dilemma at https://rosher.net/2022/07/21/it-still-isnt-easy-being-green/ Although rail travel is ostensibly 'green', in this case it has red edges...
The Caspian Tern is the largest of the tern family with a wingspan of 145cm. There are only a few accidental visitors in the UK and this one appears to have a damaged left eye. What must it be like, flying around with a carrot on your face?
