Amandine's Plot Treize

Melon

I've tried growing melons for 4 years. My ultimate goal has always been growing them in the compost heap but that's where all the slugs from my plot hide in the summer so I've had limited success with that one.

I don't have enough space in the greenhouse (mostly due to the cucumber jungle), and it gets too much shade in the afternoon so not the best spot for sun-loving hungry feeders.

This year, I decided to chance growing melon plants under cloches by the compost heap (but not in it), the idea being that they'd eventually have access to very rich soil.

This is the only plant that's made it, I think it's 'Mangomel', a cultivar recommended on Gardening with the RHS.

My approach with melons is whatever they do is a bonus. If I get tiny fruit, I'll just treat them as cucamelons, and if they're bitter, my friend's Guinea pigs will enjoy them!
