Medieval Origins

I have noticed this week the first ripe blackberries appearing. and the apples are showing well on the trees. Today. I also noticed the fruit on the medlar tree at Buckland Abbey in West Devon. The main blip photo shows  a detail from the Abbey. The strange looking medlar is shown as an extra. The fruit originates from Iran and south-eastern Europe and is believed to have been introduced to this country by the Romans. It is, and looks, an ancient fruit which was populat in Medieval times and may have been eaten by the monks of Buckland Abbey.
