Fairy Tale Day 5 Liquid Fairies
A beautiful day, tempted to do one of the Sound of Music cycle tours, but left after breakfast back over the border into Germany using a back door rather than risk the main German-Austrian Autobahn crossing which would have had G7 control delays. Don't even remember seeing any control where we crossed.
Then rejoined autobahn to Munich as far as Prien on what locals call he "Bavarian Sea", the Chiemsee, the largest lake in Bavaria with 80 km² and 64 km of shoreline. Took the ferry over to Herreninsel (Man Island) where mad King Ludwig II (the Disney Castle guy) also built a replica of Versailles named Herrenchiemsee Castle.
Then another ferry to Fraueninsel (Woman Island) noted for its nun's monastery, founded on my birthday in 782 (yes 3 digit year). It's also a centre for craftspeople from the pottery & similar scene. A very relaxing atmosphere just to stroll around & enjoy a refreshing drink overlooking the lake.
Then onwards to our hotel in Munich, directly alongside the site of the Oktoberfest, the Theresienwiese. Work has already started on putting up the massive steel girders for the "tents". Then, using the €9/month public transport tickets we bought, underground into the centre (2 stops) and wander around the bustling streets & squares.
Bavarian 'Dinner' at notable "Zum Franziskaner" brewery restaurant, Angie naturally having to have Haxn, pork knuckle. She even stole one of my potato dumplings as her single one wasn't enough. The waiter even commented on the fact! Then more sights & sounds, the Viktualienmarkt, the Rathaus at Marienplatz & of course a walk through the Hofbräuhaus. I daren't show the full picture of one reveller for fear of being excommunicated by Blip!
Extra photo today's journey & Geotag on our hotel which shows nicely how close Oktoberfest site is to inner city.
