A Stroll Around The Old Town

Well, not so much a stroll as a climb: we decided to explore the streets of the old town this morning and, as you can see in extras, they are pretty precipitous - and very pretty!

We set off in search of the house lived in by the author of the book “Aegean Dream” which we have both read. It’s about his and his wife’s experience of trying to set up businesses in Skopelos, having been inspired to give up their life in California by a holiday spent here.

The book gives a very clear idea of where the house is and we found it about half a mile up (literally!) the road from our hotel. From there we descended into town then up , then down then up again through Sunday quiet streets, eventually reaching the remains of the Venetian castle, with stunning views eastwards.

Fortunately the castle now houses a restaurant where we enjoyed a welcome beer before descending to the harbour. The main blip shows two the the three attractive white churches that line the descent.

A bit of retail therapy in the shops near the harbour and then it was time for lunch in a cafe, watching the world go by.

The afternoon was spent by the hotel pool and reading, before an evening meal of souvlaki, where we discovered that, with typical Greek generosity, “4 pieces” does not mean one skewer with 4 pieces of meat on but 4 skewers, each crammed with meat!
