Cana Island Lighthouse

I went to stay with my youngest brother who lives in Door County--it's the Eastern edge of Wisconsin that's on a narrow strip of land that juts out into Lake Michigan. He drove us up to Cana Island which is separated from the mainland by a rock causeway. Depending on the levels of Lake Michigan you can, at times, simply walk across to the Island. Today the water was about a foot high, so we took the wagon across--it's pulled by a tractor and deposits you on the island. The Lighthouse was first used in 1869 to protect ships from the rocky shores that surround the area, as are evident in the top left photo. Unfortunately the lighthouse was closed for repairs so we couldn't go inside, but we wandered the grounds as it was a beautiful, clear day. I spotted the pelican out in the water all by itself......it's an American white pelican that's generally found only in the interior of the U.S. and Canada. They utilize fresh water and are native to the Door County area, having been documented in the early history of Wisconsin, and their numbers have been steadily increasing. :)
