Flower Friday and some crocs

Today we did a croc tour on the Adelaide River and saw some of these great creatures coming up to the boat to see if there was a feed to be had. They were hard to capture on film as they were unpredictable and the other people on board were also trying to get a shot. A bit like a whale watching cruise I guess.

The big one in the middle is about 6 metres and must be 100 years old at that size. They keep on growing throughout their lifetime. The largest caught was 8 metres long but they are pretty rare. There was an intense culling in the mid 1900s so there aren’t many that old ( big ) left. Now they are protected in the wild but commercially farmed for leather and meat. The numbers have increased rapidly as they are top of the food chain and are now at a self sustainable level. A dominant male like this one would have a territory about 1kilometre long with 8 or so females who are also territorial. You need to stay 6 metres back from any water as they can lunge at high speed from shallow water.

I have added a flower as this pretty orange coloured one fell from a gum tree while I was sitting outside. It was another hot day and we needed yet another trip to the pool to cool off. We have never swum (more a splash) so often.
