Yellow Vetch

Day #12 of #30dayswild was largely spent at a joint meeting of the South Lincs Flora Group and the Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union at Dunston Beck. As well as recording, we were collecting specimens for the Lovelincsplants legacy project  - eleven species added in total. One of the plant highlights was a population of double Cuckooflower, very tall and still in bloom!

On my way home I dropped in very briefly at  Rauceby Warren NR, where there was a splendid display of Yellow Vetch at its only Lincolnshire site. This scarce plant is an annual found as a native in a variety of coastal habitats, including scrubby grassland and cliffs, and on open yet consolidated shingle. Inland it is usually found as a casual on roadsides, quarries and railway banks, but the population of Rauceby is well established and persistent. . Lowland.  I also found several plants of the tiny and even rarer Fine-leaved Sandwort - not the easiest of plants to photograph!

I arrived home just in time for a Chinese takeaway, shared with the whole family. Lovely to have everyone around the table - and good not to have to spend time preparing food at this busy time of year!
