Still on the look out.

This is the statue of Alexander Selkirk in Lower Largo in Fife, which is placed on the site of the cottage in which he was born.   We passed on our way home today and I wanted to see it, having only read about it before. 

Selkirk was one of the original inspirations for Defoe's Robinson Crusoe (there were others) but shorn of that his story is a sad one - a misfit when young with a wanderlust that brought him neither happiness nor a long life.  

He was stranded at his own wish, then regretted it before the boat that he served on had left.   However in  the succeeding years on his island he seems to have gained some serenity , only to slowly lose it after his "rescue".
