Bodmin Wild Ponies

On our last day we travelled to Minions on Bodmin Moor. We started at the Hurlers stone circles. However the ponies stole the show. A herd was grazing near the stones. One poor Mare was being hounded by a stallion despite her having a foal. She was lashing out kicking her back legs into his chest and neck. We had to be aware their whereabouts as they came thundering past. One photographer had a narrow escape. The main shows a more tranquil scene of a mare with her young foal.

We then headed out on the moor to Stowe’s Hill with Cheesewring Tor. The quarry below it extracted granite to be used in monuments and apparently some was used in the construction of Tower Bridge. Unfortunately the weather closed in and we beat a hasty retreat to the car. The extras show the Cheesewring, the Tor of Stowe’s Hill, the quarry and the Heritage Centre.

There was lots of evidence of mining with shafts fenced off. Unfortunately the pictured Heritage Centre in the old mining building was closed.

Back to base for a cuppa and preparations for a long journey home tomorrow.
