Saint Mary MacKillop and some flowers
Yesterday I hardly had anything worth blipping as we travelled in the rain. Today I have lots so will put in some extras.
The main is St Mary MacKillop in the church of St Peter and St Paul which is a beautiful dugout church. Many buildings here are underground due to the extreme weather. We had rain until this morning and now it’s fine and clear but with a brisk breeze. They don’t get much rain and the caravan park is very muddy as are the streets and cars.
We decided to do a morning organised tour which was quirky to say the least. It was the most unorganised tour I’ve been on but fun nevertheless. George does it everyday and has done for years. Due to the rain the bus slipped all over the place and quite a few choice words were uttered by George.
Our first Stop was the underground Catacomb Anglican Church where the rector came and said hello. Next was the old police station lockup ( a tin building which would have been deadly in the summer heat), then the Catholic underground church where I spied my blip of St Mary. Our granddaughter goes to MacKillop College so I took this for her.
We drove down all the back streets and up little hillocks. Some facts (as per George) ….water is scarce and was bought in by camel (28 gal per week per person) til an artesian bore and water purifier was set up. It’s very good quality but still scarce. There are no English style gardens, a few cacti and Stuart’s Desert Pea. The golf course has no grass but people carry some artificial grass and set up their Tee on it.
The town is off grid and all power is from Solar and wind.
The RSL is open on Sundays. The Croatian Club is open Saturdays. The Greek Orthodox Club is open Fridays. The Italians have more fun as their club is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The drive in is open Saturdays, the speedway monthly, gun club is weekly, horse races annually.
Most of the extra shots are self explanatory except the doorway into the side of the hill. It was a residence and then the Commonwealth Bank.
The Jewellery is of course Opal, I asked if I could take a photo and they said that was OK.
Distance travelled so far is 2294 kilometres.
