Marga's Bench
Our neightbor, 87 year-old Marga, lived for 11 years in the house next to this bench. The bench was dirty, decrepit, and ugly. She decided to paint it, and then she continued to decorate the corner around it, turning it into a very inviting place to sit. She continually cleaned off the graffiti and added wall decor. She made a scrapbook of the evolution of the bench and of all her friends who have sat on it over the years. Today she asked us to come to the bench so she could add our picture to the scrapbook.
What an honor!
The sign carried by the girl says: "Respect for the rights of all the people is peace," which is a quote from Benito Juarez, the beloved Oaxacan who was the only indigenous president of Mexico.
