Burghfield Lock

A beautiful sunny day ripe for a nice long walk along Holy Brook, and the Kennet and Avon canal.
This is Burghfield lock, built between 1718 and 1723.
I think locks are a fascinating feat of engineering. The whole system has to be designed to make sure that the canals don't drain, with each boat going through moving 1000s gallons of water.
I remember going a on a barge holiday with my girlfriends when I was in my early 20s and we did a run of about 12 locks - very hard work - thank goodness there are a lot of pubs along the canal ways!
