Laugh And Be Happy

Went to see Josh Widdicombe at Kendal Leisure Centre last night. Another show that had been delayed by covid. As he said near the start, when the tour started Theresa May was Prime Minister! He was very disparaging about having to perform in a sports hall - joking that he’d have to finish by 10 as there was five-a-side match booked for then. Even more upset to find out that we did actually have a theatre in the town. I’m hoping his management told him he would only have sold half the tickets if he’d booked the theatre instead, as it only has a couple of hundred seats, compared to the 900 capacity at the leisure centre.
It was a great evening though with a lot of laughter. We even managed to put him off his stride when we explained what a tarn was (“so, it’s a pond” “no, it’s a tarn!”) and then pointed out that Windermere wasn’t a lake, it was a mere. He then jokingly asked what other words we had for lake. Water was the reply (as in Derwentwater) which prompted a tirade of very funny abuse accusing us all of winding him up on purpose. Overall, a very enjoyable way to spend a Sunday evening.
And we could all do with some laughter and happiness to counter the continuing drip feed of bad news about war in Ukraine, spiralling inflation and ever increasing energy prices. And now there’s a new virus - monkey pox - to scare us with. The media seem intent on telling us that the numbers are small and the disease is not deadly, whilst at the same time trying to imply that it will soon be sweeping the country, forcing us all into quarantine or isolation. Very irresponsible reporting in my opinion.
And I certainly wasn’t laughing at lunchtime when I filled the tank on my car. The pump pre-authorises a maximum amount of £99 worth of fuel and I very nearly had the situation of the pump shutting off before the tank was full. I think I’ll have to switch to topping up the tank as soon as the fuel gauge drops down to half full, especially as diesel is set to become even more expensive as the U.K. moves towards zero imports from Russia. I know that’s a good thing as far as world events are concerned, and it should make me happy, but it’s still a kick in the wallet each time I fill up!
