Savannah's memorial to an insurrectionist
Savannah's shaded Madison Square was designed and laid out 1837-1839. The square is named for President James Madison and is the site of a statute and memorial to Revolutionary War hero Sergeant William Jasper. Sgt. Jasper was killed near the square as he rallied his regiment during the British siege of Savannah in 1779.
Savannah is a beautiful old southern city. It is worth a visit if for no other reason than to wander the old streets, enjoy the regional food, and admire the 19th century architecture.
