Breaking the surface …

Perast was the spark that lit the fuse to ignite our Montenegrin adventure. A casual search through possible package destinations suddenlyt alighted on this gorgeous little town - though this is very far from your average package trip.  Our initial infatuation was supported by the following view of Lonely Planet:

Looking like a chunk of Venice that has floated down the Adriatic and anchored itself onto the Bay of Kotor, Perast (Пераст) hums with melancholy memories of the days when it was rich and powerful. Despite having only one main street, this tiny town boasts 16 churches and 17 formerly grand palazzi. While some are just enigmatic ruins sprouting bougainvillea and wild fig, others are caught up in the whirlwind of renovation that has hit the town.

And so it is we find ourselves in one of these renovated palazzi overlooking the sublime Bay of Kotor.

My fears of airport chaos were misplaced; we sailed through from bag-drop to lounge fizz in just over 30 minutes - and that included having to unpack my entire camera kit. The flight was blissfully uneventful, car hire pickup straightforward, and Montenegro seems as stunning as we hoped.

We spend the afternoon strolling along the coastal promenade and exploring the steep step-lined back streets, then tonight we dine in the hotel’s restaurant right on the shore‘s edge. Clearly, we’ve been given the best table to watch the sun slip down behind the mountains, the temperature dropping sharply until the sudden wind dies down leaving the bay mirror calm. And as the twinkling lights of coastal towns emerge, we watch a small motor boat breaking the still surface of the water and leaving a rippling wake of shimmer in its wake.

So it’s the twilight shot that makes the main tonight, with extras of our shore-side meal, the view from our room, and a collage of Perast.

It’s been a long, long day ….
