Bog-Myrtle

An enjoyable trip to Foulshaw Moss late morning. The big attraction for visitors are the nesting ospreys. We had a long and very informative chat to a volunteer manning the viewing point. The female is sitting on three eggs, so hopefully another successful year.

He also talked about the flora around the hide. This example is bog myrtle. Rub the catkin between the fingers and it smells like menthol. It was used as an insect repellant. I’m not sure how successful that might be - reviewing this image I noticed the spider’s web, and then the little spider (the catkin is about 1cm long for scale) which must be hoping something comes along.
