Market day
Villedieu is a small town famous for making bells, we did the tour three years ago. Bells must be an integral part of everyday life, we can hear them ringing at 12.00 noon each day and suppose they tell the workers it is time for lunch?
Today we visited the market, quite a large affair spread over the town with a terrific atmosphere, John had a chat with two English teachers who come over with a bus load of pupils every week to sample a everyday life in France, (I was off making an appointment for a haircut on Friday. Gulp!).
For our ‘on the hoof’ breakfast we had a sausage in a baguette, think of a Cumberland sausage, with tomato sauce, not bad at all and Charlie our lovely temporary dog helped me out. We bought a selection of cheese, a few of those large ungainly but great tasting tomatoes and some meat. Later it was a pleasure to sit in the sun and people watch over a coffee.
It was a hot day with a pleasant breeze, a good drying day should describe it well. The local farmers are busy, I can always tell when it’s the old fashioned farmer driving by, he has a slower pace than the others. Along with his wife they work the farm and live along the road and always wave, he must wonder who we are, the other drivers wave as well although they are far more intent on driving to the next field to think about strangers in the camp. After only a few days we can see daily changes in the many fields around us and appreciate all that they do.
