Hadrians Wall

A day out on the Solway coast. We started at Silloth, moved on to Bowness on Solway, had a walk around the Cumbria Wildlife Trust reserve at Drumburgh Moss, and stopped briefly to look at the church at Burgh by Sands. We were really lucky with the weather.

We found ourselves following the route of Hadrians Wall from Bowness, which was its western end point. Apart from a raised grass ridge, it is not that physically evident in Cumbria. Part of the reason for that is that a redundant wall was an excellent source of stone for buildings in the mediaeval period. That is especially obvious in the churches along the route, which were constructed using the stones from the Wall. Recycling is not a modern phenomenon. This example is St Michael’s at Bowness on Solway.
