Greater Scaup

When I first encountered this pair of ducks they were far from shore, and I thought that they were also Lesser Scaups like the ones I saw in April. After comparing the image with my bird identification field guide, I now believe that these ducks are the closely related Greater Scaup (Aythya marila). There are subtle differences between the two breeds that make it difficult to tell them apart.
