To be more flats in Hampton Wick?

This building in Hampton Wick I pass every time I go to my allotment. It  was built in 1889 to be the Assembly Rooms for the newly formed area of Hampton Wick which formed its own government  board and built offices, the ornate building is still in the High Street, in 1884. In 1922 the Assembly Rooms first housed a Dance school and continued to do so until recently. Often in the summer the windows would be open and you could see dancers plus hear the music. Kelly’s dance studio catered for both children doing ballet and adults doing ballroom dancing. I saw recently that planning permission has been applied for to convert into three flats.

This area must have been very different in the early twentieth century… apparently there were 51 shops and seven public houses. There are still three public houses, I remember three others closing in the last 20 years. There are now very few shops but quite a few restaurants, two nail bars and four hairdressers!
