York City Walls

Just a month after walking around the city walls in Avila, here I am doing it again, this time in York. Although the old city has been surrounded by walls since Roman times, very little of the Roman structures remain. The remaining walls were mostly built between the 12th and 14th centuries, so "only" about 700 - 900 years old. They give some great views of the massive York Minster and lots of beautiful terraces of houses.

Other highlights of the day so far were the River Ouse, a bit of 16th century devilment in Stonegate (the devil was then a symbol of a printer's shop) and some Roman stone coffins, now used for flower displays. The Museum Gardens looked terrific with all the spring colour.
