This message from Lily, aged eight (she is unknown to me), was placed at the foot of the local war memorial in Motueka, surrounded by floral tributes from the public and organisations. They were beautiful and formal - but this note caught my eye for its thoughtfulness from one so young.


The red poppy has become a symbol of war remembrance. People in many countries wear the poppy to remember those who died in war or are serving in the armed forces. In many countries it is worn on Armistice Day in November, but in New Zealand it is worn in April for ANZAC Day.
