Stark……
Very early this morning I and Maisie walked to Seymour Square where preparations were being made for the ANZAC Day service to be held later in the morning.
645 white crosses are lined up in garden beds surrounding the War Memorial. 645 crosses all carrying the names of local soldiers who lost their lives during the First World War. Made all the more poignant today because of the war being raged in Ukraine.
“….the countless white crosses in mute witness stand….till’ man’s blind indifference to his fellowman….and a whole generation were butchered and dammed…”. The lyrics of “The Green Fields of France” haunt me… they can be just as easily applied to Gallipoli.
Today is ANZAC DAY in New Zealand and Australia… when we remember those who died at Gallipoli and in subsequent wars.. Lest we forget.
