Hearing and seeing ...

I went to visit my audiologist this morning for a tweak of the settings for my hearing aids. It was a glorious walk and a very productive appointment. On the way there I stopped to take a few shots of this circular bench round a tree in the grounds of South Woodford library.

The illustrations depict various aspects of the history of Woodford. In extras you can see a memorial to Sir Thomas Rowe, who was buried in 1644 in the parish church of St. Mary across the road, plus a note explaining the origins of the medieval settlement of Wdefort.

Hurst House, which is also depicted, is Grade II listed and was completed in 1714. It was described by Nikolaus Pevsner as "The best house in Woodford". I included it here because it has recently changed hands and now there are prominent signs forbidding photography. Its alternative name is "The Naked Beauty" because when it was built it stood all alone at the top of a hill, but I would advise anyone who is interested in knowing more to Google it under the name Hurst House for obvious reasons!
