The Star Inn

A sunny Good Friday!

We decided we'd make the most of it and go out for a walk, this morning, firstly to The Treehouse Café for breakfast, and then we thought we might explore further north from there.

In the end it was after ten when we set off, walking through Peel Park and staying alongside the Irwell until we reached the Treehouse for scrambled eggs on toast and coffee. And from there, we were into terra incognita!

During her research - the Minx is an irrepressible researcher - she had spotted The Star Inn - "Britain's First Urban Co-operatively owned Pub!" - so we decided to head there, walking up Lower Broughton Road, passing the home of William Crabtree, who, according to the information board, made the first observation of the transit of Venus, an assertion that was challenged when I sent a photo through to Dom (who is a proper astronomy nerd).

Then we were at The Cliff, which, despite its dramatic name, is the rise which overlooks the Kersal Wetlands, and the Minx found some old photos of people watching the horse racing from that vantage point. And from there it was just a short walk to the Star Inn, which was charming and, with it being so warm and sunny, we sat in the garden and had a drink.

Thus fortified, we continued to follow the outside of the northern loop of the Irwell, passing through Kersal Dale (see extra). It was beautiful and I reckon we had a good day's exploring.

(In the evening we went to see 'Operation Mincemeat', which I would recommend unreservedly!)
