Danish scurvy grass

Once confined to coastal areas, this unassuming plant is rapidly spreading inland - especially along main roads where it extends its range by as much as 10 or more miles each year. Roadside verges which are often salty because of run off from de-icing salt provide an ideal habitat. The seeds are wafted along the road in the slipstream of passing traffic.

Scurvy grass has a high Vitamin C content and was famously used by Captain Cook and other mariners to ward off scurvy.
